The Degree Programme is taught in English and will qualify the student as a Registered Nurse (UAS). The programme is 3,5 years long and consists of 210 ECTS credits. The programme is suitable for students who are interested in studying in a multicultural group and with promoting health and caring people throughout the lifespan. Language and communication skills are highlighted during the whole education.

Structure of the studies

The curriculum is based on nursing science and other sciences relating to nursing as well as evidence-based nursing.

The education includes working experience 75 ECTS credits. This clinical practice is conducted in different nursing environments e.g.: internal medicine, maternity care, paediatric and adolescent units.

The professional studies will start from the beginning of the studies strengthening the student’s knowledge and skills in different areas of nursing. Language studies and studies in information technology, entrepreneurship and other basic studies will enhance the student’s learning for the profession.

Employment opportunities

The knowledge and the skills needed in health care change rapidly. This requires an ability to work independently and flexibly and a readiness for multi-professional and multilateral co-operation both nationally and internationally.

The students should be able to communicate in Finnish at the end of their studies. This will enable them to become employed as Registered Nurses (RN) in Finland.

A Student Story

Okundzi becomes a nurse

I am a Sudanese Student at Central Ostrobothnia University of Applied Sciences in Kokkola. Becoming a nurse was one of my dreams after finishing my Philosophical and Theological studies in St. Paul’s National Major Seminary University of Rome in Khartoum, Sudan in the year 2000. I arrived in Finland in the year 2003 under status 3A. And found out that the Central Ostrobothnia University of Applied Sciences was offering a degree programme in nursing in English, for which I applied and started my studies in September 2005.

I am much impressed by the institution: its outstanding that educates culturally competent public health Nurses to work in patient care in a variety of duties involving co-ordination, planning and development. Its also outstanding infrastructure and extremely competent and skilled staff provide a high standard of education required for the public health nursing profession. I am also taken by the sense of comradeship of my fellow colleagues in the class and department at large. Some of us come from countries as far as China, Nigeria, Nepal, Kenya, Sudan, Uganda and USA, while some are Finnish which becomes multi-cultural University. This teaches us a lot about our different cultural backgrounds and also be able to interact in a very positive way.

Therefore, this degree programme is a very valuable introduction for those of whom who wish in future to work as a team member in Finnish society or multi-cultural society being international health care organisations elsewhere in the world.
